Bachelor of Visual Arts Undergraduate Exhibition Series: ‘The Local’ 2022

I was fascinated by what “Australian culture” really is and what its relevance might be in a wider world. As a settler artist, with parents born overseas, I have inherently observed Australia from an outside perspective. This central series of works draws from my personal experience to depict aspects of an iconic yet controversial environment: a local club. The faux naïve style is intentionally vague and is not meant to hold judgement or to provide a specific commentary. The figures are non-verbal and devoid of expression. Thus the work asks the audience to offer their own personal views. With the hope of finding better ways to understand each other and open broader conversations about what Australian culture could be.
